The Cabin In The Woods (2012)

80s horror movie fans, The Cabin in the Woods was definitely written just for you!

A group of young adults go to a remote cabin for a vacation. Their names are unimportant because you will recognize each character as previously seen in ___(insert any slasher film from the 1980s here)_____. What dreadful thing they are faced with is equally unimportant, (and you can insert any 1980s horror movie villain or monster here if you'd like), because it's how it all comes together that makes up the meat in this very humorous and imaginative story.

Did I just use the term "imaginative" to describe a movie that I've indicated ripped off every 1980s horror film in existence? Yes, I did. The movie has one little thing that you just don't see in a Friday the 13th, Halloween, _____ of the Living Dead, etc... film. It has puppetmasters that orchestrate the events, and they know their job well.

I loved it! It answered all those little irksome questions that one might have about a contemporary-classic horror movie. Questions such as "Why the Hell would a couple decide to have sex in the creepy woods when there's a perfectly good cabin bedroom twenty yards away?" and "Why are there always the same assortment of personality types in these films?"

Usually I don't like films that mix genres and are quite blatant about it in their presentation, but I had to make an exception here because there are two very different environments in play. So I can certainly forgive... nay, agree with... the abundant CGI effects in a film that feels like it should be practical effects at the moment. (You'll probably never hear me say that again!) And yes, it's not only very funny but there is plenty of blood to go around.

I could go on and on about how much fun this film is to watch. If you're a horror movie buff, then watch it without hesitation. If you're not into horror films but are a fan of Joss Whedon's work, I suggest you watch a few classic slashers first so you'll be in on a lot of the jokes!
